Urgent housing support for a South Sudanese refugee family of 5
United Kingdom
Kan, a bright, focused 20 year-old from South Sudan has recently started playing with us at the Easton Cowboys Football Club. After joining us at the anti-racism world cup in Belfast this summer, he quickly made an impression with his kindness, composure, and sense of humour – he also loves the Cowfolk and our community values.
Kan and his family have been granted refugee status in Bristol since January of this year, having previously never been to the UK. Their housing, orignially planned to be in Easton, was changed at the last minute to Avonmouth – far away from Sudanese communities or more racially diverse church congregations to join.
Their rent payments are well over the odds, and after it is paid they have very little money left for the month. In addition, they have missed one payment, and their landlord has threatened that they will be evicted after missing three.
They have reached out to the Easton Cowfolk for support, and whilst we are working on longer term ways of doing this, material solidarity is needed quickly and vitally!
Kan, his mother, older brother, and two younger siblings fled civil war and ethnic cleansing in South Sudan, before enduring a decade of street life, racism, and further violence in Egypt. Now that this lovely family have reached out and want to settle as part of the Cowfolk family, we need to show them that they are welcome and supported!
